IF CHR$=MCP 1: THEN READ

by Chris Sorrenti

02 REM: *MCP 1*
05 Enter pass code into alpha program
07 All circuits are positive, but for how long I don’t know
20 There's a bug on the loose writing off logic
25 I know I'm not supposed to get emotional
30 Requesting input from MCP 1

40 DATA, 338477, 289, GL33, FV38398jsl; NEXT

50 This is Master Control Program acknowledging upload
52 This is a problem you'll have to compute on your own
55 You've been downloaded to interpret imagery messages
62 Given authority to enter every system

70 Take your time analyzing the situation

75 PEEK 47758, 45 I: POKE 11273,2; Ghy*X

80 The program you're magnetized to has common specs
82 She speaks BASIC
83 And can transfer to FORTRAN on the proper command

90 Be careful though
92 Any faulty coding
93 And the virus scan will delete you from the network

95 DATA 4756, 33hj3p98H, "3@??", 847732966, 7**?%//4545

100 Advice acknowledged
102 Circuits have copied
103 Opening power scan for hostile entities
108 Let's take a chance and enter the next subroutine

110 See if that program I interfaced unsuccessfully
111 8 microseconds ago
112 Is still open

115 PEEK 20044598, 33-I: POKE 552139,7; Pbl*Y

120 If we link up
121 The system will be ours

125 Please stay close MCP 1

Author's Note: Inspired by the movie, Tron (1982), and exposure to early computer languages in high school, namely FORTRAN, COBOL...and BASIC, as per the Commodore series of computers in the 1980s.

I've used all those programs Chris. Maybe that gives my age away. Very nice write!

A most fascinating analogy. One that takes one in different directions I think according to ones imagination.

What? Now I know I haven't lived...PEEK and POKE sounds a bit dubious, but maybe that's OK here in your thinly veiled power ballad :>)

nice write Chris. my mother used to say my eyes are too big for my head, which is to say, that with all this technology and all this communication made available to us, the human need is really simple. all a human has to know in this world is only one word. it is a word we can all easily live with, and yet we complicate the landscape and confound ourselves with language so technological, I am certain Martians would be pulling hairs out of their heads trying to figure us out. And here everyone thought Martians were born or evolved into a bald species, when it was only frustration on their part with trying to communicate with Earthlings. Love, baby is still the word. Pure, simple, unexpurgated and complexless.
