He Was Finally Happy

by John Harder

The little things in life made you smile
Watching the ducks splash in the creek
Going for coffee
in case a friend happens to show
Seeing your grand kids play
and watching them grow out of it

Your life
it wasn't an easy one
The loss you suffered
was more than most would endure
I can't imagine how it hurt
when mom died
She was the only one you ever loved

It all happens so fast
with no time to think
No time to consider
what life will be without you
Why now?

"He was finally happy"

Everybody knows
that's just how life is
but it doesn't make it easy
It hurts so much
to say goodbye

When someone close to you
bids the final farewell
the trials of every day life
become so meaningless
so trivial

"He was finally happy"

Author's Note: This is a goodbye to my dad, who passed away last night.

John, I'm very sorry for your loss. The stanza talking about how the trials of everyday life seem so trivial is so true.

My deepest condolences John. Having gone through the same process...that last stanza sums it up oh so well.
