Fey: Hearts Return (an Autumn Death)

by Alison McKenzie

As the last lights
Of the past year
Dim to fate,
So, too,
Fades the glimmer of the
Once-love.

A shush of leaves
Dance
In death,
Precedes the final remembrance
Before winter cloaks
Bury gentle eyes,
Oh, eternal sleep
Of muted hearts.

She, bereft, wanders
A ground unfit for slumber,
Unaware the bitter frost
Lies
Nearer to numb than spring.

Her peril breathes
In wisps and ghosts,
Ravenous demise of an
Unsuspecting soul.

Cast by vengeance
Into shadow
For deeds done by other hands,
She seeks a shelter,
Love,
A shield given only to truth
When intentions fail;
When avarice ruins
The shimmering sanctity
Of mated muse.

Should sage's redemptive breath
Find her thus,
Endurance prevail and love,
Amethyst invoke
A return from curse -
The end of such a poorly cloaked
Illusion.

Prays, she, that love endures
For all who truly seek it,
That ill-acquired hearts
May return to their rightful homes.

I love your work. Can I say more? What you offer here is another example of a poet deeply and unerringly in touch with her emotions.

I agree with Philip. A beautiful ode, Ali.

A most beautiful plaintive plea for Love to overcome all; to right the wrongs, to quiet the spirit, to finally win a lasting peace.

how could i have lived so long without this poem? just on it's own, this stanza broke my heart into a jillion pieces: "She, bereft, wanders A ground unfit for slumber, Unaware the bitter frost Lies Nearer to numb than spring." an instant favorite, forever! xopk
