Caffeine Creature

by Chris Sorrenti

Caffeine creature
Got your drip drop computer
Input a quarter
And out pops the answer
That muddy coloured water
Shop around for the best mix in town
It tastes like rocket fuel

Caffeine creature
Stayed up for that double feature
While drinking a cup
And watching Robert Young commercialed on the tube
Splashing a friend’s mind with decaffeination
And fascination the parallel to Count Dracula
Coming in too late
And being scrubbed to the bone by the sun

Caffeine creature
Got your jitter shake friends
Society meetings in office corners
Where your launch pad hums
Unnecessary necessity
To counterforce that morning down
With the answer of the drip drop computer
Brewing the finest blend of rocket fuel in town

Author's Note: For those unfamiliar (especially below the age of 50) with the name, Robert Young (1907-1998) was an actor, who starred in various radio, television series and movies. Back in the 1970s and 80s, he appeared in several commercials for Sanka brand decaffeinated (or better uncaffeinated) coffee. Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decaffeination.

Being way over 50, I immediately smiled as I read the name Robert Young. Perhaps he knew best as a father, but he didn't about coffee...decaffeinated coffee was then and always will be now and forever an abomination. I smiled from the first stanza to the last. Thanks for sharing.

I'm not a coffee drinker (tea for me) but my folks were and that morning ritual was enjoyable for the smell of the brew if nothing else. I really like your use of "rocket fuel", the launching pad humming, that sly "unnecessary necessity". This poem has a jaunty java jive and I enjoyed it very much. Thanks!

Sipping my joe at this very moment and smiling at this tribute to the Colombian bean, Chris!

June I totally agree with you, caffeine or nothing. I was said we should have made a Ford vehicle that ran on coffee. Without it the company would have been standing still Nice write!!
