All Their Lives

by Philip F De Pinto

All her life
She had been practicing
To be Magdalene
To his Jesus

And given all her life
She has been on the brink of tears
She cried Jesus a river
On which he walked
Side by side with salmon
Red as Magdalene's hair

Until the one
Who all his life
Had been practicing to be Jesus
Encountered a water fall
For which he was ill prepared to scale
Or he lacked the faith
To leap and spawn with the rest
Of the salmon
Red as Magdalene's eyes

The extended metaphor here is so fine, the realities and limits of one's endeavors revealed.

I love the way you tie it all together in the last stanza. The waterfall visual is excellent!

Sort of like Looking for Jesus in all the wrong places...better to be Jack and Jill than Jesus and Magdalene, at least you will only tumble down hills, Water falls can be devastating.
