The Future Of Poetry In This Household by Chris Sorrenti
12:30 A.M.
Looking for clues to a victimless crime
i screw a magnifying glass
into the conveniently placed mount on my forehead
though not necessary
this house - full of images
complex metaphors
waiting to be deciphered
like a digital clock radio
whose numbers if stared at long enough
become alien
i've played the evil genius
a one man crime spree
and though good for my poetry
found it more hazardous to health
than the cigarettes i can't seem to live without
12:35 A.M.
Every family is suppose to have a poet
the family poet
i live alone
so it's up to me to carry on the tradition
the air at this late hour - full of edibles
immune to the humidity that robs me of sleep
unable to satisfy the hunger in my belly
but good for my pen
and damn anyone who may question their appearance
under my eyepiece
12:40 A.M.
It feels good again - a machine gun orgasm
though this crime does not involve sex
only a determination to get to the facts
and the truth
there is no crime
having just covered up the evidence
with fingerprints
whose squiggly lines bear a strange resemblance
to the red neon of a certain clock radio
as for the future of poetry in this household
i think the question's been answered appropriately
and that deserves at least one cigarette

Posted by Ken Harnisch on 08/31/14 at 03:35 PM I don't live alone, Chris, but know enough to know I'm the poet in the family and the tradition will probably go with me to wherever, whenever I go. Great poem! |
Posted by Philip F De Pinto on 09/01/14 at 12:35 PM I've always loved poems which were off the beaten path and this one, Chris, blazes unique ground. I love the line about covering up the evidence with fingerprints. |
