Years From Now

by Chris Sorrenti

someday
when others may ask if I knew you
as we once shared a common geography
my face will light up
as it did that April afternoon
on the bridge to hopes and dreams
realizing we were special together
even if for a short time
and how the Spring air
cool but inviting
welcomed us home
as it does all migratory birds
no matter how far they’ve come
still have to go

and if they ask further
how well I knew you
I will be subtle but speak proudly
to their puzzlement
of guardian angels
visits to hospital
and cats able to fly
to mend two broken hearts
and of a photograph
that no trick of computer
could ever completely divide

and if they should add
but she is the more successful
I will still cheer you on
satisfied that at some point
in your journey
of survival and renewal
my words held merit…influence
both of us better for the experience

and if they ask finally
why I celebrate with you so far away
I’ll simply say
she’s a friend of mine
and no amount of distance
can separate cats like us
who’ll never forget that special flight
and years from now
will still know how to fly

There are some deep experiences here for you two flying cats, uniquely yours. All is not shared but enough to feel a compelling bond. Nicely done.
