Breaking Through

by John Harder

In our respective corners
we cannot leave
The world can be scary
and it's hard to breathe

The hours slip away
while we point the finger
Put aside our differences
We must no longer linger

We can see eye to eye
We can stand on even ground
Love breaks through like a wrecking ball
but it doesn't make a sound

Author's Note: I've been sifting through my journal of poems I had long rejected and forgotten, and am finding a new appreciation for some of them. This is one such poem, with minor edits for clarity and flow. (I was young and reckless, so form wasn't a priority at the time.)

Pretty good, John. I can clearly see the seeds of more recent poetic triumphs in this piece. Always love to go over other people's older work. Cheers!

I think if we stow what we think are our disappointments far and away in some dark bin, that in times of reflection and looking back we discover with fresh eyes that they are not as disappointing as we thought but rather held a fascination which we failed to see on first observance. I love the image of love as a wrecking ball which makes no sound.
