On the Tongue

by Clara Mae Gregory

Their tactics are to
toil their troubles
upon the tarnished
twits in the tavern
tasting the tall tales
of truth transformed
on the tongue
by the ale.

so true. Ale is not only a medium for rabble rousing but it is a truth serum, as well, enticing the truth out of one as plain water can never do. In truth, we don't go to bars to get high or worse, but rather to tell the truth, because it takes great courage to tell it, we need the enticement of ale to tell it to anyone who just so happens to occupy the stool next to us in a bar. and because truth is rarely spoken when sober, we rely on ale and harder stuff to tell it in the absolute. Yes, we love to tell the truth, except no one wants to tell it or hear it when they are sober, so they rely on booze to soften the blow, which is fine and dandy except the next day, you have such a hangover from telling it and hearing it, plus your forget what that truth was that you told or forget who you told it to. Which is good in a way, for to hear truth is to forget it, so it appears brand new each and every time you tell it or hear it.

Great use of alliteration in relating this not so tall tale.

***STELLAR*** As one who frequented taverns in my younger days, this struck a familiar chord. Not to mention, excellent use of alliteration.
