Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em

by Chris Sorrenti

How many times I’ve welcomed those words...

Means a lull in the fighting, take a break
but in this case
one of the many slowdowns of men and materiel
coming off the Sea of Words
it (the sea that is) being especially rough this year
on account of the weather
not much moving in or out
at least in the open
the Navy and Air Force blockading all the rest
the whole shebang under complete radio silence
I’m surprised this message even got out

As recent as last June
we’ve been massing on the borders of the World system
every five days or so
a new division brought on line
moved to its jump off point
each with a unique size and purpose
no two exactly the same
according to the experts, one of the side effects
of continual movement of the planet
through time and space

The receiving army (nineteen so far)
determining their destination
some already infiltrating
advance units sent out on patrol
days, months...some even years ago
‘sleeper agents’ you might say
gathering intel’ for the ‘big push’

Went to mass last Sunday
interesting sermon
the priest just kept repeating:
“The fire is the passion,
the flood is the poetry.”

Whatever that means
hey, I’m just following orders
like every other Joe in this outfit
hoping to get home in time for Christmas
or as soon as possible at least

Laying low for now
behind a cover of bitter cold
mixed with powerful blizzards
snow we’ve not seen the likes of since ‘71
a polar vortex some are calling it
and then after overhearing General Patton the other day
mentioning the word ‘Blitzkrieg’
and how history repeats itself
though never exactly the same way
that good ol’ 'Shock & Awe'

Considering the weather
for all I know
this might as well be the Ardennes in ‘44
but this time we’re the good guys
and ‘the push’ is going the other way
only a silent invasion up till now
but full scale just the same

Still, the locals aren’t stupid
most welcoming us with open arms
as liberators
while others a bit more apprehensive
though easily won over
with much needed food for thought...
allegories and metaphoric flowers, chocolate, and wine

In any case
we won’t be here for very long
cause you know when the cooks serve us fresh hot food
instead of K-rations
as they are now...

Yup, smoke ‘em if you got ’em
‘the push’ is coming soon

Yes--hopefully words will eventually fulfil their promise to be mightier than the sword, and more effective than a simple anagram...

I really admire the conversational style in this, Chris, and the depth of thought. It makes me think of what might have gone through my dad's mind and my uncles' minds during WWII. A fine piece of writing.
