We walked without shadows by Laura DoomMelissa wore little more
than a wide brim and shallow smile.
The tease of seven echoed pleasures
glittered as sweat kissed her skin
and drew obscenities on my naked mind.
Summoned to the shade of a manna ash
withered in adolescence, we shed
the weight of midday heat and lay
notionless, burnt offerings to a god
obscured by the haze of industry
to which we once aspired.
A sparrowhawk skimmed waves
of wilted grass that crowned
our doleful glade; clouded yellows
floated dreamlike, capriccio in ripples
of distress. I opened my eyes,
and smiled
in the belief that I was staring
directly into the sun. Our pleasures worn
as habits, our fears played out
in ritual; not until Melissa had melted
to memory were my eyes unsealed. Life
may not be sweet, but I have grown
to savour its tasteless symmetry. 02/25/2014 Posted on 02/25/2014 Copyright © 2024 Laura Doom

Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 02/26/14 at 11:20 AM A very unique and thought provoking expression of relationship. Interesting, the dangling word linking S3 and S4. |
Posted by George Hoerner on 02/26/14 at 03:50 PM I love the word 'notionless' as most of us live our lives thinking of what comes next. Very well done! |
