Everything in the Whole Wide World by Kristina WoodhillI know where everything is at
for I went there yesterday
neatly laid out in aisles, five miles
of colors and things to touch
and need and want
and such
shelved high
like bales of hay
I know where everything comes from now
choices galore,
pens and pots, thumb tacks, red dots
seasonal bags with eye dazzling spots,
plastic in every iteration
intent on cutting heavy glass costs
why, I could party every month of the year
from there
where more = more
I know where
plush bear waits
toilet brush hangs
powdered fruit slush
drinks, canned green mush
smile and grin and nudge
mixed in with two-step
quick-baked micro-brewed
no, wait! I think it was roast fudge!
I tell you it's all there
signed big and loudly
proudly hollered
a circus barker owns this market
at the Dollar Store

Author's Note: Answer to Live Poetry Contests challenge in the forum to write a poem on the spot. I have to admit, I've been thinking about this one for a few days since going shopping with a maniac shopping friend to three dollar stores with after Christmas sales. Yikes!

Posted by Quentin S Clingerman on 01/05/14 at 10:58 PM Great reflection on the Dollar Stores. Glad to have them but wouldn't want to spend hours in them (more like fifteen or twenty minutes at most).

Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 01/08/14 at 03:02 AM Even before reading that last line, I had a feeling what this was about, just from the descriptiveness and variety. I'd say you nailed this appropriately. Neat too how certain kinds of stores and chains can be found at least in North America, if not most of the world.
Posted by Laura Doom on 01/09/14 at 08:20 PM Good one--here they're called [unsurprisingly] pound shops (price beats quality in post-festive crush).
Posted by Veronica Phoenics on 01/11/14 at 03:14 PM i was wondering what that place was, but was carried along so nicely by the jaunty rhythm of the poem that I came to the end quickly and pleasantly and wishing to go shopping. If only there were a pound shop in this country :)
