Making Fruitcake with nuts

by A. Paige White

Take nine or ten kinds of nuts
on a good day - in good weather
before one gets squirreled away for a gun.
Add concern, inappropriate jokes and laughter
to get the oil squeezed from a pressed era.
You stir them in the snow, the rain or the sun.
Some will wilt, some will bloom and flower,
put that in your bowl and mix them altogether.
Some sleep in all their clothes and forget to rise and shower.
One plans to turn the table over if the smiling one
returns with his gun, confusion, and a grudge
I chuckle at the bowl and make a target for my head
Because I’m not moving and I won’t budge.
Right now this fruit and these nuts are where I’m fed.

Our words mix and mingle, tickle and tingle, offer us delight
Who needs a window with a view when laughter tops the rafter.
I suggested one tell a loved one, “My hypochondria is acting up!”
One or two scowl and inform you if you step over their borderline
One’s ankle bracelet’s beeping but doesn’t notice the sound
Two borderlines frenzily look all about, around, up and down
before anger management explodes at this new noise
histrionic girls will be girls and boys will be boys
I observe it’s a good thing the suicidals are right there
should this person suddenly self detonate
It’s a while before our sick humor and giggles abate
and we don’t care what others think after such a scare.

Now I’m ok with fruitcake, I try hard not to judge
But I must confess to all I’m a chocoholic
and would rather have a bowl of nuts in the fudge.

as a fellow chocoholic i do have a penchant for all kinds of nuts, they are hard but hold a lot of flavour. Nicely done :)

Quite a view of life - maybe of the past year? Fun read even with its poignant moments.

A woman after my own heart. Fun, dare I say? Nutty poem. Love the rhyming, really adds to the effect. Hope you're still writing, and a great summer to you and yours.

Your whimsy is good food, nuts and all. Lots of clever word play here and the laughter lifts me. Thanks for this!
