Christmas 2013 by Chris Sorrenti
gone are the thousand dollar Christmases
no need to put up a tree
for in a way every day
is Christmas in this house
gifts are given throughout the year
to ourselves and best friends forever
while the young one
always appreciates cash
a unique celebration
slowly evolved over decades
of steadily reduced commercialism
it and political correctness
no longer welcome in this house
there’s a home made wreath
on the front door
of carefully wound branches
festooned with pine cones
tinsel and ribbon
to tell those passing by
Christmas is still celebrated here
but our way
garlands of silver and gold
coloured tear drops and balls
of every shape and size
hanging from them
strategically placed among pulsing lights
throughout this happy home
and though it may not be a mansion
it’s out little castle
where family and friends gather
reminisce and dine
to timeless Yuletide classics
for us
the true meaning of Christmas
