Winter of the Great Snow Ball Fight by Kristina WoodhillJust before midnight at twenty degrees
Blond and black Tom cats were shooting the breeze
Soft through the cat door a low word or two,
Discussing their last exchanged tiff, floated through
Hinted-at fleas and a mention of mange
Some casual comments of conduct deranged
Word upon hissed word, they built up their cases
Defending positions, displaying saved faces
Like a sledding hill's highs that thrills fast then glides low
These two hip cats played their stringed songs, forced a show
While snow kept a lie low, moon slid a bit closer
Bare locust tree froze, let his shadow defer
To the mounting non compliments, unshared tail-twitched blame
Spitting parts of infinitives half way down our lane
It was hot air to hot air, freezing nose fur to nose
And here I confess to the wrong step I chose
If you've ever attempted to scare, in bare feet,
Just before midnight at twenty degrees
A pair of hot felines, not the good kind of heat,
It's not worth the tear-up result, nor the tease
Yelling, clapped hands, I reproached the two Toms
Which signaled their slow fuse to set off a bomb
From yowling to rolling as one in the snow
Claws tied into fur like a big Christmas bow
Locust tree, moon and I blanched as the two
Became one growing ball,
Round and round,
Through and through
Only the fence to the west had the sense
To stop their trajectory, halt their intents
I tell you our roof could have heard its eaves drop
By the silence that fell when that snow fur ball stopped
Imagine a snow globe, a blizzard inside
With two tooth-filled heads glaring four blazing eyes
Next day
You could hear neighbor's say
As they slowly walked by,
“Well, at least until spring they will see eye to eye.”
