Carrot Thief by Mary Ellen Smith
The carrot thief is cunning. Always hopping always running.
His big eyes alert to danger. Looking out for every stranger.
Every night he hops to town. Hops up the streets and down.
Up and down til almost froze, looking for a nose.
A nose of great distinction that will keep him from extinction.
You see the winter has been cold. The forecast had foretold
A winter full of flurries. Full of trouble, full of worries.
Blizzards and avalanches. Lots of snow on all the branches.
In the town in all the houses, live the kids and men and spouses.
Drinking hot chocolate by a fire near a tree that they admire.
Sparkling trinkets catch his eyes through the window where he spies.
Then bundled up in woolen coats with scarves around their throats
They gather in the snow, neath Christmas lights aglow.
Where together and with much glee they build a snowman for all to see.
The carrot thief is hiding. Quietly abiding.
Waiting for his chance he does a little dance.
The snowman’s eyes are bright and his smile a welcome sight.
They take out the carrot nose and finally put it where it goes.
The thief waits until they retire back inside warmed by the fire
And up to the snowman steals the carrot for his meals.
He stops for a short time contemplates his nosey crime.
Then feeling a little like a rat, he takes the scarf and hat.
