We are our parents now....... by Sandy M. HumphreyI could say we
are our parents now
And all of you would agree
As we start feeling our age
And experiencing our mortality
Yet the truth is we were barely
Out our high school doors
And into the wide world
When we lost Chastain and Reese
And chills went down our spines
Could our days end this quickly
In time and what if we hadn’t lived
Some of us took it literal
And burned our candles at both
End never letting the sun set
Or rise without the party continuing
Grabbing all the good times to be had
Saying we would settle down some day
Or we would never grow up any way
Others built sturdy solid lives and businesses
Tracy saw his dreams come true
And cancer too
Sweetest guy we ever knew
And some just disappeared
Floated into the world as free
As they had always wanted to be
And never gave 1975 a look back
Or used FB to keep track
So they don’t know that
We are our parents now
We are holding on to yesterday
Memories and each other
And trying to comfort
When the losses come
We are our parents now
And our children and grandchildren
Are the legacies we leave
As we grieve
The lost youth
11/15/2013 Author's Note: A hard week for the class of 1975 as we see classmates deal with loss and sorrow. Brings it back and makes me think of who we were and when we first felt the mortality of our young lives now not so young.

Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 11/22/13 at 02:04 PM Hey Sandy...same year I graduated. I see a lot of myself and my parents in this piece, especially since I retired in June. Good memories, but also a bit daunting, as I'm ambivalent about growing old, hoping my health holds up as long as possible. Thanks for sharing this and good to read you again! :) |
