Odd Meetings

by Kristina Woodhill

If I met a vampire
I suspect I would address
My obvious concern,
Back against
Each taunted mirror,
Brush up on my rosary,
Grab a clove of ā€œgā€ and burn
Any record shelved within
The binders of my trembling mind
Lauding family members
Tracking, like a pack of wolves,
Tempting scents of tiny stains
Upon the blowing, howl-chilled snow

If I met a dervish
Imagine me, I would,
Whipping out
My long iron hook
End of which
Was forged to curl and hide
Within the folds of spinning tales;
Catch a thread, I would!
So strong I'd soon be woven,
Spun within fine cosmic gauze
Unminding me,
As if in winding
I might meet
All time
Before time
Clocked
And there I'd pause

If I met a woman
With two sides to paint,
What's there to lose
In following
Her black-and-white unnumbering,
Grasping coloration in an abstract
Sort of plying of two coats;
Reds set her free, yellows allow
Fine drops to shade her orb,
She dabs about, this woman
With two sides to paint,
Finds her waiting sunsets
In an orange bursting
Bliss
Without a calculated stroke
And full
Of unaware

If I met a toad
All bumps upon
Its humped,
Brown back,
Just up from its deep slumber
Adjacent bog newt's chambers,
Where muds of youth
Share messily, not a care,
A squish of feet, all in!
And not a priss in sight,
I'd plant myself on
Old Log lying,
Basking in its rotting lair,
Knowing at the sight of toads
A warm spring rain
Would find me there

S2 is my fave - enjoyed the entire read though. It's fresh and intriguing!

Excellent wordage and poetics from start to finish Kristina. Makes me wonder where the seed to write this came from?!?!

Fiction is, I imagine, the closest we get to reality without divesting our manufactured finery...
