Flowers Are The Isaacs Of The Natural World

by Philip F De Pinto

And so you were ready - set!
And so you went down to the flower shop
To make that old sacrifice of flowers
To pluck to pluck to prove you were loved.

So you blew twenty bucks on a bouquet
The oracles of which said she didn't.
You blew your top and called that last petal a liar
And set it on fire.

As the lesson didn't take the first time -
You reached into your wad and blew another twenty on another bouquet
To the same announcement - she didn't give a god damm!
You blew your stack - oh but you had so many stacks to blow this day
And called that last petal a liar
And as was your usual set it on fire.

Needless to say it was a windfall for the flower shop
As it sold you its entire stock of oracles - all with the same result
The girl just didn't give a good god damn!
Or was it the case of the opportunist flower shop owner
Who saw you coming and plucked all the she loves me petals from its bouquets
So he could sell out and go home early and coil up in the arms
Of a girl who we assume gives a good god damn!

But then he has all the she loves me petals to prove it!

Love the humor in this piece...I can imagine the flower shop owner counting all the petals on each flower to make sure it comes out she loves me not. This is a wonderful piece, heartbreaking but lovely...

Beyond clever about those "she loves me" petals, is all I want to say!
