The Long View

by Kristina Woodhill

I sleep with the window wide open at night
No blinds drawn
No city lights reflecting or shining through
To the other side of me
Of where I've been hiding
Or not
Of where I've been weeping
Or not
Your ninth year gone, come the fortnight
I stood on the North Rim three years fading
Trying to feel you, willing you near
Reviewing black and whites you sent
In thick brown envelopes
Scribbled all over
With that crazy Italian smile
Wide as the Canyon is deep
Stretching from Ponderosa pines
To Bright Angel's long twisting ascent
Back pack with shoulder straps
Holding you down
Your growing wings not yet visible
You had to be there
It was October

I can truly appreciate this. Wade and I went to the Grand Canyon for the first time last early November. We spent 2 days and nights in the canyon at Phantom Ranch. We camped under the stars without a tent at Indian Gardens as we ascended back up on the Angel Bright. We are going back to the west coast in Oct. and plan to go back to the canyon as well if the weather is good like it was last year. This time my brother is coming along too.

Wonderful m'lady! As usual, it takes me places I have not been for some time. Thanks!

love the vivid imagery this provokes for me, and even that ache in my chest when I finish reading it. well done

I forgot to add that it also blends the sad ambiguity of a personal loss of someone close with the natural beauty experienced and very well done.

I like how this poem demonstrates how we all deal with loss and grieving in our own unique way, and as a result each related poem different, and yet still able to touch others...us all spiritually, having gone through our own similar but unique experiences.
