These Are My Days

by Alison McKenzie

I listen to the morning disintegrating;
Dew drips and crickets
And early morning traffic forming.

My bones protest the walk to work,
But I silence them, eventually,
With a fan and a cup
Of good, strong coffee.

I have no sense of tomorrow,
Or the unknown days yet to be.
I have only today
And its minutiae,
The ever-present “now”
And its relinquishment
Of hope and, yes,
Even dread.

The panicky crickets,
Who, just the night before,
Had chased the Sun
With a serenade
Meant to stop his setting,
Have since fallen so in love
With their own sweet songs
They no longer miss the Sun
And, in fact, have forgotten
What they panicked about
In the first place.

And these are my days,
My nights on the cool breeze of relief,
And my faith.

Quite beautiful, Ali. I listen to my own set of crickets outside the window as I write this.

I'm coming into my days also I think. The question is how many more there will be. But I have nothing to complain about. I just got my 2nd cataract removed yesterday and today the Dr says I'm good to go. I do recall that she didn't say for how long. Hope you are doing well lady.

Lovely. Just last night I sat awake listening to the crickets, and now I too much pull myself off to work without thought to tomorrow. Yes, how true your words ring.

The title says it all. Gorgeous in its imagery and sincerity.

I like the grayness of morning that I feel, that image, the awakening, the immediate and the implication thereof, understood, good woman...the chirping that drives my knowing. CHIRP! TWEETing as we do.
