Reality Check

by Monique Louw

I've seen the sun rise over Lake Malawi;
Snorkelled with the fish in the Seychelles;
Tossed a pebble off the cliffs of Dover .
Launched my wing from a mountain top
With fear in my belly and courage in my heart.
I've taken a raft to churning white water
And camped on a beach in Mozambique.
I've sung Bali Hai in French for the elderly and disabled.
I know what free fall feels like and the icy touch of the wind on your skin at 11 000 ft.
I've flown a gyrocopter over crowds and
Had my hands on the bar of a hang glider far above the world.
I've seen flowers that only bloom once a century.
Lowered myself into the inky depths of a cave to see a thousand bats in their roost
I've scaled cliffs and climbed crags
I've been dirt poor and dressed in rags.
My paintings have been bought, sold and treasured.
I remember with crystal clarity what the inside of a submarine looks like
I may not be able to recite a single poem, but I can quote Lavoisier
And solve a second order differential equation.
The thrill of gliding down a mine dump on a sand board will stay with me forever
There's a steel blade forged by my hands
I've lived in a cottage with a pig in the yard and my guard dog was an ostrich.
I've hiked around a meteor crater and held snakes.
I've hunted scorpions and nursed wild birds back to health.
I've seen a desert thunder storm and Buckingham Palace.

And you think that quoting Nietzsche and playing guitar makes you the coolest thing ever to happen to me?

LOL! Hey who are you man? Laura Croft: Tomb Raider??? Serioulsy, great poem. Well, you can't knock a guy for trying...think we've all made that mistake once. Live and learn. Sounds like you need a guy likes James Bond to satisy your needs. Good luck! :)

His loss, obviously. I'd like to hear more about just one of those lines in detail.

Gotta love that last line. Leave 'em where they lay. Well done.
