Employee 998 by John HarderWell I'm up before sunrise almost every day.
Gotta wake up early but I'm stayin' up late.
By quarter past eleven I'll be feelin' ok.
If I make it to the weekend I'll be sleepin' all day.
Well my eyes are glazed over when I'm punchin' the clock.
Thinkin' to myself 'will this ever stop?'
Overworked and underpaid, that's just how it is.
I'm walkin' proof of that but hey a guy's gotta live.
[Chorus]
I'm a Canadian workin' man.
Got no name but I got a number.
I'll try get out if I can.
Cuz I'll drown if I go under.
Some characters at work drive me insane.
Nothin' good to talk about so let's all complain.
"Workin' hard or hardly workin'?", that's fuckin' lame.
You may think you're better but we're all the same.
Been running on nothin' but coffee since monday.
Five workin' days a week with a fistful of change.
At work I wear my earplugs to drown out the noise.
Friday night I'm goin' out drinkin' with the boys.
[Chorus]
I'm a Canadian workin' man.
Got no name but I got a number.
Will I ever get out of here?
Well I doubt it, but sometimes I wonder. 07/14/2013
Author's Note: "This is blues riff and beat. Watch for the changes and try to keep up."

Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 07/14/13 at 04:55 PM I can sooo relate to this poem...song, John. Well done in capturing the plight of the everyday working man and woman. The numbered employee title only adds more impact to the irony and impersonality of the piece. |
Posted by Sarah Wolf on 07/15/13 at 01:01 PM Sounds like a country song. I hate the 9 to 5 routine myself. It drains you. I think we have gotten away from our true selves with the way we work now as opposed to how we use to work. I think we have moved from a natural state into a false and artificial way of things that our body and mind can only reject and have an immune response to as you have shown here. I feel for you. I feel for us all in this matter. That we cannot dig ourselves out with the lucky few. |
