Deflecting Reflections by Kristina Woodhillhourly now
papa sparrow
baps, taps, beaks
head punches
our outside kitchen window
mama sparrow
nestled in their nest
above the window;
presumably
the pips have pipped
papa defends
against that reflected
interloper – one scary bird!
getting closer
and closer
each time
papa dukes it out
no matter
we have undisguised
the reflective glaze
with tape streamers
thin plastic sheets
two old blue towels
papa knows
threats when he sees threats
tape streamers, towels
taken down
we left him to his
spring loaded
mind set
canyon county
motor vehicle division
announced yesterday
carrying concealed
permit requests
too numerous
each day
clogging
waiting
lines
for normal
driver's license
requests and renewals
carrying concealed
requests
will hereafter
be limited
to 20 per day,
preference
given
to applicants
already displaying
bullet holes
extremity wounds
will please
allow head shots
to the front
of the line
those with no visible
wounds,
mirrors are available
out in the hall

Author's Note: The last three stanzas are exaggerations ;) - everything before that is now in progress.

| Posted by Paul Lastovica on 05/01/13 at 07:31 PM I like the subtle shift from father sparrow imagery, carrying concealed. Sometimes a little exaggeration is required to clarify a point one way or another. A naturally protective nature can not be denied or deterred, me thinks. |
| Posted by W. Mahlon Purdin on 05/04/13 at 11:13 PM You are unbelievable. What a poem. I reread your first poem recently, so I was prepared, I thought. It's still you but the power has much increased. I didn't notice a mirror anywhere. Thanks for this, Kristina. |

| Posted by Laura Doom on 05/11/13 at 10:07 AM Solution: append hitherto concealed accessories to hood and tail; everyone will know where they stand [and/or fall]; queues will shift to A&E/ER; bird-brains will litter and fly...
Your mirror, as ever, reflects and informs :>) |
