Words For Sir Paul

by Chris Sorrenti

as if this sassy Beatle doesn’t have enough kudos to his credit
with so many hit records
I’m sure even he’s lost count
now has to muscle in on the poetry scene as well

don’t get me wrong
he along with John George and Ringo
count among my earliest creative influences

if not for the words to Yellow Submarine and Band On The Run
I might be penning award winning novels
or playing guitar in a famous rock band
instead devoting the better part of thirty years
to free verse and rhyme
not to mention some very catchy song lyrics
but not once was I invited on the Larry King show

after all that time and energy
still scratching my way to the top of poetry super stardom
counting my blessings at having the odd poem published
in various creative writing periodicals of mixed distinction
patiently waiting for the right publisher
worthy of putting out an entire collection of my work

however all this upstart from Liverpool has to do
is wave his knight’s sword
and every publishing house in Britain
is clamoring for the rights to his first book of poems
appropriately titled Blackbird Singing

have to admit the bloke has style
and what he did read on Larry King
I’ll begrudgingly say sounded pretty good
maybe he’s been secretly reading my stuff on the Internet
picking up pointers on how to compose a great poem

already given readings in Liverpool, New York
and Britain's Hay-on-Wye literary festival
Sir Paul will soon be embarking on a world tour
no doubt attempting to recapture
some of that long lost Beatlemania

and if he should decide to include Ottawa
despite my previously mentioned frustrations
I’ll welcome him with open arms as a fellow wordsmith
however Mr. McCartney and I may have to share
some rather unpoetic words
if he should attempt to steal away
the hundreds of screaming girls
who regularly turn up at my readings

I really enjoyed the humor in this, Chris, little jabs at Sir Paul, great ending. I expect to hear about your own world tour anytime now.
