Sex and Drugs

by Tim D Livingston

Consistently,
I find myself strong mentally.
I draw a straight line in the sands
with the stands I choose to take.

I say no to sex and drugs,
but sex and drugs take many shapes
because the same open wounds cry for an addiction,
to find a poison to numb the pain,
to find comfort in a different state of mind.

Pass the bottle please.
I’ll take a needle as well.
To inject myself with my own self-righteousness.
There is no drug more toxic
than my own distorted perceptions
seen through the guise of religion.

If the Pharisees had rolled up their sleeves
and plunged into methamphetamines
then their wounds could be seen
for what they really are,
the Sinner’s Prayer would have been easier,
the end of the road would have come much sooner than never.

what a great look at hypocrisy, for which we are all at fault!

As someone who has battled the demons of addiction all his life, I can truly relate Tim. One of the best examples of soul searching in relation to the inspiration that I've read in a long time. Thanks for sharing and reinforcing. Heading straight to my favourites.

Although in first person, this certainly feels like all of us. Great third stanza - nails us all on our pointy little heads. Thanks.

Fair I Sees & Sad U Sees, religion; religion; religion; without relationship. It's a scary thing to commit to be in a relationship with another sinner. That person just might decide it's ok to hurt me and ask forgiveness later! Risky business, that. I'm much more at home with real people that have real issues, some of them life and death issues that have to be fought daily. I've had a taste of both, religion or relationship. and there's no comparison. Relationship wins every time. Great reminder!
