Frontier

by Glenn Currier

They were not clad in Navy attire
but I recognized them as sailors
each arriving with a knock or a bell
one after another
ready for yet another voyage,
cards in hand, like passports or tickets
each in an envelope enclosing authorship -
testimony of fellow travelers.

None of them needed a map to get here.
They knew the way.
Each had been here
for meals, celebrations,
occasions of searching
or fun
of a walk or run
into a rising or setting sun.

Sharers
of stories,
segments of heart
moments of laughter and tears
pictures from trips
music and art
good food, wine and beer.

Their passports stamped
with Shanghai, Liverpool,
lost islands,
found treasurers,
embarkations for explorations
into regions with mountains and swamps
valleys green and rich with life,
glaciers and caverns
restaurants and taverns.

Are they sailors or anchors
in the lake of my life?
Each is a wizard with a wand
that altered my course
above and beyond;
each a source
of happiness and love
forcing me to look
below and above.

They came to remember and remind
that birthdays are defined
by each minute and day
I clear away
the refuge of fear
and replace it
with life
and love.

Like parents who watched my very first step
they came to help me take that tentative step
into the new frontier
of my seventieth year.

I was lost in all the wonderfully curious scenes and unprepared for the...very......last .......line. I'll say both; congratulations for another fine write, and add, Happy Birthday with hopes for many good departures, echoed by even grander arrivals. Thank you.

You've given us a marvelous gathering of your years and friends. I loved the idea of the passports, the map, the sailors or anchors. That second to last stanza is the heart of it for me. Happy Birthday, Glenn!

Belated Best Wishes, my friend for a wonderful day and year. You've done a wonderful job of describing a glorious celebration. The fifth stanza is sheer perfection. Just brilliant. My POTD.

Outstanding, unapologetic insight. I loved it.
