Millennium

by Chris Sorrenti

this is a brand new road we travel
uncharted on any map
though our direction
laid out eons ago
Y2K passed
before it’s even reached

letting science be our guide
confident the ageless one
intended it this way
still showing faith
in a higher power
whilst no shame
believing in ourselves

as continents once marooned us
so too this planet now
ever stronger the stars
calling upon our species
to see the road ahead
we need only look behind

Those who are in power, both political and economic, don't see any reason to respect science unless it does something for them and most don't want to pay the price so in the long run it seems we may lose far more. Nice write Chris.

Nice reflection on that giddy time of wonder and dread. Seems the future is just going to be a vast, conforming suburb of the soul, and it may be that community will be just another commodity, a product to be sold at a profit. Beware that. Excellent write. Thanks.

Truth be told. Why do we squander precious resources while we could be using them to reach for other worlds, where resources would become infinite? That is a rhetorical question of course, as there is no profit in abundance.

There was such excitement with the coming of 2000, like that clean tablet of paper I always loved when buying supplies for a new school year or opening up the new box of stationery. I'm amazed at all the emotions this short poem brings to me, looking back at hopes and seeing the quagmire we are in today. Oh, sigh.....
