Thoughts on Children

by Kevin Fehlen

Hate isn't something one is born with;
It is learned from the ignorant generation that precedes them.

Imagination isn't taught,
It is born from the eyes of innocence.

Why is it then that children
are squandered their imaginations,
And taught to hate?

How can a person look a child in the eyes
and tell them fairies aren't real?
And in the next convince them of the evils of
homosexuality and to hate their ways?

But it's unnatural!

NAY!

Hate is unnatural.
Hate isn't something one is born with.

The world is a place of beauty and perfections
through the eyes of a child.
Many children I've seen are told to walk and not run.
Be quiet. Stop laughing. Don't do that.

Are we so fucking miserable that we honestly wish
to break children and show them the supposed "truth" of the world?

Who has not heard complete wisdom uttered from the mouths of babes?

It would serve the world well to listen;
not only to the children around us,
but the children inside us.
For there is no stranger a thing than
a man who will refuse to admit he was once
a child, as if he exited from the womb
a cantankerous adult.

Yes, listen to the child's voice in your ear.
The one born without hate,
And bred with a wild imagination.

Author's Note: Perhaps it's my new work with children, or the prospect of having a child on the horizon. Observing the schools, and teachers, and our current situation with suicides and homophobia, but a part of me believes the world would be a better place if run by children.

Couldn't hurt to try. Nice work.

Children are amazing teachers of what humanity should be...except if they're overdue for naptime:P Although I sometimes wish I could throw myself on the floor and have a good tantrum now and again.
