Please Don't Wake Up

by George Hoerner

your silence
sounds like thunder
rolling across
three thousand miles
with no reduction
of intensity or direction
it drives straight
through my heart

i understand you
want nothing
at this time
in your life
that might give
a different perspective
on reality
or lack there of

but most of my life
has been one
of breaking rules
of saying that
the grass is blue
the sky is green
god is good and
god is evil and
at the same time

i know you
started that way
but you’ve settled in
to the niceties
that society offers

the purse snatching
must have been
far more upsetting
to your view of reality
than it was to the
physical side

i’m sorry!!
some people
should not have
their idea of
the good life disturbed
i have as good a life
as i can expect
better than i deserve
i ask for nothing more
than the most difficult

someone else who
really wants
to understand
that which
at least for now
cannot be
understood

if i’ve woken you
i apologize
go back to sleep
and i will return
to my search

Poets are poets because their eyes are open to reality. Without closed eyes in the world we may not know how lucky we are. That is to say, without darkness we can not confirm the light.

that last stanza says it all George and hits us where we live or used to live in the world of naivete, before something shook us awake. alas when the world wakes, some by sheer necessity must remain asleep as if to balance it all. I cannot imagine a world, fully awake. I think a world in such a state would be thrown off its orbit.

I love the concept of the sound of silence. I also like the yang/yang (Good/bad) Another great write!

Clever use of reverse psychology George. There's a lesson for all of us here.

The 'good life' as petty theft, the question to that plethora of answers;
theme is your calling George...
