October Light

by Richard Vince

Every year, I forget how beautiful
The light is now, in the few days
That I am allowed to see it.

Perhaps I should rise in the dark
Next week, just so I can enjoy
The world covered in gentle gold
When I head home.

These are not long, lingering
Summer evenings, though:
The October twilight is fleeting.
Unlike the lazy Summer sunsets,
It hurries off below the horizon,
Unnoticed by all but me.

While the Summer seems to
Wear on forever, the Autumn
Is a wonderfully diverse collection
Of weather and light,
Beautifully juxtaposed.

When else can driving rain
Hide the city while the setting Sun
Highlights a turquoise and ochre sky?

So much beauty;
So few days.

It is dark by 6 pm here now. Your 4th stanza really says it all - "wonderfully diverse collection of weather and light, beautifully juxtaposed."

My favourite time of year aptly illuminated. Thanks for sharing this Vince.

I always notice the fleeting light but then again I am afraid of the dark. Beautifully put as it is lovely to see.
