Recall

by George Hoerner

i recall in those minutes
just past midnight
as the eye lids sink
further into darkness

or those of predawn
before the sun rushes me
into actually acknowledging
those brain cells must be mine

that i was young once
not baby young
but i must have
passed through that also

i sense those days
when a girl going on a woman
taught me Shakespeare
and some where between the lines
also taught me how to kiss

and as a result she has
stamped her initials
into my brain forever

You've made me recall some very nice sets of lips along the way - I'm sure you're right about the stamped initials, George. Thanks for this.

...you brought me to to a seventh grade hayride, and it too was crowned with kiss. but who is this person Shakespeare?

mine was the girl who taught me to tie a tie... and yeah, George...it's indelible!

This is a terrific piece, George. The title draws the reader in and the poems does the rest (no pun intended). It's something we can all relate to and your depiction of events are not only dreamlike but realistic as well. Good stuff!

Hopefully, your next will recount adventures with the French teacher :>)

is there anything worth learning in this world outside the classroom of a teacher who is a girl? I was in this girl's classroom not so long ago and her specialty was breaking hearts. needless to say I passed her course with flying colors, the all of which will never fade, particularly the lapiz lazuli, the blues of the blue.
