Fey: The Burden of Humanity

by Alison McKenzie

My ego reads
Like a sappy
Grocery store tabloid;
Sensationalized drivel
About the self-sacrifice
Of good deeds gone awry.

Sure I’m interested in
Mayan calendar’s end
And tomorrow’s spirituality,
Shift of a planet
On thin ice and prayer.

I’d like to slip into
A higher vibration,
The stuff gods are made of,
And gypsies too.

I want to use my gifts
For the betterment of humankind,
Just allow me to wax sentimental
About the pain in your aura
And the souls who want to be born
In your timeline.

None of this is incidental.

None of this is on the big screen for debut.

None of my sarcasm will crisp one leaf,
Or stop the solar flares from
Taking technology off the table.

I just want to know
When the suffering will end,
And how to find my tale.

The first three lines should go on a little pink post-it and slapped on my bathroom mirror. The last three lines are enough to inspire a religion and a myth. What will be the tale of me? Good question worth contemplating... which I am already doing - as I type. Thanks for this superb piece, Ali.

Ha -- the antithesis to describe our fey relationships; sweet'n'sour as haute poetics...

"I just want to know When the suffering will end, And how to find my tale." This poem is superb, Alison: word to word, line for line. But oh, does this last stanza hit home!

Nicely stated, very succinct...emotional. As for the last two stanzas, I think you speak for all of us 'decent' human beings.

I too loved those final lines..leaves much to contemplate. What if somewhere in each of us we do know the answers? Maybe they are within our reach in the now and then? Anyway loved this beginning, middle, and End! :) thank you
