Beyond Wizened Laugh Lines by Alison McKenzieThe shape of it changes
With the words.
But the heart of it
Is a steady rhythm
In an otherwise
World of improv.
I see your hypotheticals,
And consider a raise of
Half my stack,
Which would put you all in;
But for now, I simply stay.
I don’t bluff,
By the way.
My poker face reads
Just like my sleeve.
What you lack in birthdays,
I lack in innocence.
And where I see your heart
Through lenses that
Bring reality into sharps and 7ths,
You see spring
Under a blanket of winter-white
And sleep.
Yes, we dream.
Yes, we write them down,
For they are the only places
We know flight,
And it soothes to remember.

Posted by Jody Pratt on 07/13/11 at 06:40 AM "What you lack in birthdays I lack in innocence" rings true in is quite cleverly phrased. I also really like the reference to dream flights and how it soothes to remember. I thought I might be the only one as I often dream of being able to fly and wake up in a world of disappointing physics. |
Posted by Laurie Blum on 07/13/11 at 01:04 PM You have been posting some really great poems my friend! This one is so very powerful. I am able to just slip myself right into this one! |
Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 07/16/11 at 03:36 AM Definitely one for the "wish I had written this, glad you did" file. It's all really good, but these lines especially hit home with me: don’t bluff,
By the way.
My poker face reads
Just like my sleeve.
