Someday, We'll All Be Music by Alison McKenzie
Yesterday you painted
Me a blue shade of brood
To keep me down,
To mold me sulky.
I wasn’t quite sure if you forgot
Or if you just hoped differently
Than the fact
That I won’t sit neatly
On anyone’s page.
No, try as I might to
Just stay put,
Inevitably, I run,
Like cheap ink
On hot cement.
Build me an alibi,
Or a crescendo –
Make it splash into a brilliant array
Of vivid truths.
Make it match my aura
So the edges get blurry;
So everyone can only guess
Where the music starts and
I end.
I heard someone ask
“What’s inside my hands, then?”
And it took me three attempts
To figure out why I couldn’t answer
The first two times I heard it.
Yesterday I narrowed it
All the way down to the inside,
Until I had no place to go
But everywhere else.

Posted by Rhiannon Jones on 05/18/11 at 01:22 AM I keep reading and reading this, trying to figure out what to say. The best I can come up with is to suggest that you may be my soul sistah, or twin, or sumpthin'.... Wow. I do like this very very much. |
Posted by Ken Harnisch on 05/18/11 at 12:39 PM ah, and what an overture in those first three stanzas..and what a composition in all of it together...Music I will be humming all day, Alsion! |

Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 05/20/11 at 10:28 PM Beautiful piece of poetry, Alison. The stuff that makes other poets dream, want to incorporate new styles of poetry such as this into their own work. |
Posted by Elizabeth Shaw on 05/23/11 at 02:11 PM a lively splash! |
Posted by David Hill on 05/23/11 at 03:16 PM I particularly like "a blue shade of brood
," and the reasonably toned defiance throughout. |
Posted by Michelle Angelini on 05/24/11 at 10:36 PM Not quite what I expected, but better than I could have imagined. Your phrasing and the words used are magnificent! I hope this become potd, because it sure deserves it. If you were to ask me my favorite line or stanza, I'd have to say the whole poem. Each line and stanza is an integral part of the next. The poem itself is music.
