Lavender and Lace by Wendy SparlingSprigs of lavender lay in a wooden bowl
Drying in the noonday sun, as she embroidered
The square pouch with braided gold silk.
Heavenly scented clusters smothered the room
Ready for harvest, as she was sixty years ago.
A wry smile formed on her lips, as she remembers
Her first love, so smitten he was, introduced to
Her parents then boldly asked her hand in marriage.
Courting went on for weeks, then months until
Finally they gave in and answered maybe.
A lifetime of happiness until her love passed away
And now the only cuddling she receives, is from
Her lovable Prussian kitten, Daphne who
She found on her backdoor stoop, huddling
Against the old shed during a winters storm.
Plucking the lavender off the sprigs, she
Tucked the flowerets into their new home
And sealed the sachet with a kiss, lay back
In her, cozy armchair and gracefully snored.

Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 07/01/14 at 09:33 PM Nice story poem Wendy. My mother adopted a stray kitten the same way...found it cold and shivering on her back deck during a winter storm. |

Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 07/07/14 at 11:22 PM This is really timely in our neck of the woods as the lavender is in full bloom along some of the drives. There is something quite classic about the preservation of this fragrance and you've tied it in so well with preserving a loved one's memories. I enjoyed the story telling here. |
