Eating Popcorn with Chopsticks

by Alison McKenzie

She eats her microwave popcorn
With chopsticks.
She says it’s the best way
To keep her fingers
Away from the grease.

Her tongue darts out
To nab the buttery morsels
Quick as a lizard’s.
She says it keeps the chopsticks
Dry.

For some strange reason,
It reminds her of Communion,
The part where the Priest says,
“The Body of Christ,
The Body of Christ,
The Body of Christ…”
Maybe there is something
Divine about it;
Or maybe,
She’s just mocking
The whole idea of it.

She does it carefully,
So you can’t see that
She’s missing teeth on the bottom,
The product of having
Too many babies at once,
And no money for a dentist.

Sort of humorous –
The lady with missing teeth
And too many children,
Daintily avoids
Getting her fingers greasy.

Go figure.

She catches her reflection
In the mirror across the room,
And giggles.

Catchy title and poem to boot Alison. Very easy to visualize.

I am a clutz with chopsticks, so this really tickles me seeing popcorn eaten that way. I like the darting tongue, the lizard visual, the missing teeth, the sense of humor. Thank you.

This was great!! After reading this, I knew exactly what you were saying about yourself, and could never for the life of me put it in words, but I'm pretty sure that's a good thing. It was cute, fun, insightful, enjoyable, and made me want buttery popcorn. Thanks. really good work Ali!
