what did you do in the war, Daddy? by Charlie Morgana Royal train of effects follows the old man,
children smile while in tow of him;
his stories fall off his head and shoulders;
caught by hungry hands feeding imaginations.
seeds of apathy, indifference, and ennui
are hoed from the roots of childrens' souls
as they, rapt in glee, fulfill God's promise.
smiles swirl the air, balloons of happiness
then sent to the skies of Loves' loves.
walking this way and that; a sashay of love
lifts the soles of the souls. perfection.

Posted by Glenn Currier on 03/26/11 at 10:54 PM Well, I am still on the Royal train of effects... I can see the stories, imagine the child-imaginings. There is a sad undertow in this but mixed with smiles and balloons and a soldier's joyful progeny - I am lifted plum off my soles into my and his soul. Thanks buddy.
Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 04/21/11 at 06:40 PM This is quite poignant Charlie. Family, generations...an excellent spiritual poem that teaches, reinforces, without being preachy. And the title, at first I thought it was to be taken literally as the euphamism...war movie of the same title, but after reading the poem, I see that it has a much broader, positive meaning. And good for you...good for all of us that you've written and shared it.
Posted by Cole Atkinson on 05/08/11 at 07:48 PM Wonderful metaphors and descriptions. You really captured the curiosity of children: "his stories fall off his head and shoulders; caught by hungry hands feeding imaginations"... This is beautifully written.
