Kin of Wind and Rain

by Glenn Currier

Near the sidewalk beside the house
you tilt toward me in near embrace.
Hackberry, I already have a spouse
but your affection is not misplaced.

On the branch of Elm above
like a distant cousin’s yearning
in her gray-brown coat the dove
knows my love is still learning.

I know my neglect of you is obscene
I thought you dead in your winter brittle
your beige whisper hoping for green
ten million grassy blades too little.

Earth, only a mother could love like you
take ten billion degrees of separation
me and my species’ neglect and abuse
with only thin hints of reparation.

Yet all of you stand ready for me
bathed in kin of wind and rain
I’ve not forgotten you my family
my love for you now unrestrained.

A warm recognition that we are elementally tied to the earth.

ah, how true.

I had to rate this high on all levels, it is superbly creative, imaginative, tailored, and thoughtful...kudos star, another winner here, your library is a wealth of riches, a pleasure to read you again, peace n poems, jewels

A fine piece. I like the tight form, the naming of the trees you "know". Stanza 4 is all encompassing, which I like, plus a reconnection by the forgetful human. Thank you - this fits very well with Spring.
