Messages from Earth by Kristina WoodhillI.
1977 – outta this world, baby
golden disc murmurings
emboldened wings
Voyagers two
sonny, it was the '70's
yeah, old lady
latter century capsule
swallowed in time
take a chance
take a chance
a little surf sound
a little wind whine
throw in some thunder
cue the animal sounds
bird song and keening whale
paul simon
could have
crooned
55 ways to say Hello
musicality - commonality
imagine you and me
oh, 40,000 yrs ago
or so
star stop
star go
please, please,
please share
our umbrella
we are the walrus
would you like to
take our tour?
II.
Twenty first century popped corn
sorry for the noise down here -
lots of hot oil,
steamed up kernels
ready to pop or popping,
the lid got knocked off
and this stir-crazy popper
world is exploding
like a super nova
in a movie theater
snack shop
III.
Anybody home?
We just stopped by to say hello
we just stopped by
to knock upon your distant door
we just stopped by
to check for parking space
we just stopped by
to build sand castles on your shore

Posted by Glenn Currier on 03/02/11 at 03:57 AM This period was so rich in my life and in the cultural life of this country. I remember it fondly and with some pain as well of course. I like the look back at us - this popping planet - Paul's lyric, I could go pull the vinyl album if you like. The last line is strangely evocative. What a great way to end it - symbolic of the transitory nature of human life and the erosion of all that we build... so much to chew on here. Wonderful poem, Kristina. Thanks a bunch. |
