Getting Out of Bed by Glenn CurrierOutside a winter mist
ponders the new day.
I’ve had my seven hours
but the cocoon of bed
feels so good.
My waking sounds summon the cat
whiskers tickle my nose
eyes plead for a hand
to brave the chill
for her soft coat.
Should I get out of bed
no work urging me
no kids to feed
no job to do
wife still asleep?
Minutes ago I was seated in a theatre
and from the stage a man on a wire
swung toward me
brushed my shoulder
as if to nudge me up.
No Peter Pan,
is he a harbinger
a nettle
or norther
herald of a new season?
I was so into autumn
the orange vestiges of life
the final harvest,
plowing under old growth
wondering if new crops would be.
No more pay of eyes
expecting something special and inspiring.
I wonder
will there be springs
new plantings?
Maybe one of the quintessential questions
in life is
Why should I get out of bed? 11/29/2010 Posted on 11/29/2010 Copyright © 2025 Glenn Currier

Posted by George Hoerner on 11/29/10 at 08:23 PM I suppose we all ask that question from time to time. My back I know does and lets me know when it doesn't like the response. Nice write Glenn. |
Posted by Alison McKenzie on 11/30/10 at 04:56 PM I thnk you hit that nail right on the head, Glen with "why should I get out of bed". I think its in our nature to want to stay in that cocoon while it's cold outside! |
Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 11/30/10 at 07:23 PM Ha! I, too, love the autumn, and now you make me wonder if we are but bears without fur in winter time, and Thanksgiving is just us getting in the last big snack. ;) |
Posted by Charlie Morgan on 12/01/10 at 02:34 PM ...i never been known to 'fly off the subject' bugt some philosopher with a name said, the biggest decision to make today is whether or not to suicide...sleep is a cousin to the big D...i had the same feeling this morning at 4:10; again, at 4:18; again, at 4:33 and the real alarm wakened me to the same feeling at 4:38. wonderful write, so pervasive of human-ness. |
Posted by David R Spellman on 12/07/10 at 05:12 PM Definitely an enjoyable read addressing a universal question especially on those cold mornings. Nicely done Glenn! |
Posted by Paul Lastovica on 12/21/10 at 03:01 AM it seems to me i get out of bed to have something to look forward to come dark-time. Work is the temporary excuse for our rise and shine rituals. |
Posted by Quentin S Clingerman on 01/02/11 at 08:41 PM Why indeed? Yet, I find that staying in bed neither gives me more rest nor comfort!
Always something to ponder from your writing. |
