Those who entered for purpose of purchasing surely were "facing change". Symbolism could take one as far as the imagination will go! I would say costume shop suggests shallowness or superficiality; something temporary.

whatever we enter in our lives, change is in the air, whether we face it or not. and this poem says a lot about the facing of such in big ways though it is brief. and so ready or not, alteration, here I come.
