Advent

by Don Matley

Advent

As I venture out in my backyard world and circumspect the scene
The change is obvious.
A much frostier cold pervades the air.
The leaves have already quickly folded up their parachutes;
Their brilliant autumnal colors not blinding the deadly tines of the rake.

The birds are darting with jet-like speed to and from the feeders;
And squirrels panic as they decide whether to eat the peanut delicacies I serve;
Or bank them in secrecy for snowy times.

I also note the incessant chirping in the mature cedar hedges which border my yard.
It sounds as if my winged friends are bidding for the best beds to comfort them from the impending cold.

Near noon the normally reticent sun makes too short a return
And the kind star still shares its warmth with a steadfast pace;
But as if fearing the creation in us of a false sense of permanency;
The brevity of the event and the too quick arrival of darkness affirms reality.

I feel for my backyard friends and keep the feeders full and sprinkle nuts and seed on ground and snow;
The very least I can do, to mark my appreciation for the winged concerts and the squirrels' acrobatic show.

I enjoyed these observations - another change in season and it is a busy, busy world out there. Thank you.

I like what you've done here Don. Aptly captures the season, great visual poem in terms of the animals. Two of my cats like to go out in the back yard; don't what I'll do when the snow gets to high to shovel. Kudos!
