Off To Do It

by George Hoerner

it was early
but not that early
when i walked in

all ready there were
four or five people
loading, folding, drying

only professionals do this
day in and day out
we were there because of need

some of us because we
had run out of what we needed
others because we were asked to do it

this wasn’t my first time
and no doubt they were not
new comers either

but what surprised me
as i looked around
they were all men

i haven’t seen that many men
doing this since college days
and even then many didn’t

they had the money
and paid the pros
to take care of it

except for two Hispanics
they were all my age
or maybe a little younger

i suspect most didn’t enjoy
doing laundry
in a coin laundry mat

a little later
the women arrived
with or without children

some with many bags
filling most of the machines
early is better

...a simple task; reasons for being many and as different for each, a touch of the daily with mundanity included...there is a depth to this simple activity...carries many persons' histories in its river o' life. good un george.

One could write a social history of the world from the perspective of how people tend to their unmentionables. This piece has re-grounded me in a good way. Thanks for tending to this integral part of our culture (and sharing it).

I like the details here and your past and present observations. Takes me back to college days also. I do still take the big bed spread to the laundry-mat and it is sooo true that "early is better". Thanks for this.

A beautifully painted portrait. I love to see the everyday poeticized so well. Is poeticized a word?

early to beat the crowd, always a good choice. I have memories of the laundrymat from childhood...pumping quarters into whatever video arcade game was available, as mother fed the machines clothes and coins.

You do paint a picture. There is a certain feeling about doing clothes in such a public setting. You word picture brings it on. Airing your dirty laundry literally... Your poem piques the imagination about each of their stories - those men especially - what drama or ordinary social conventions brought each of them to this place? Thanks for this poetic peek into the ordinary.
