if God can be surprised

by Glenn Currier

Afraid our grass would die
from a wealth of clear August days
the sudden rain felled my fear
the vagaries of Texas weather
a welcome delight.

Stumped by the last sentence of the Bard’s sonnet 33
the waitress said maybe stains are sunburn.
Ah, yes, you are a genius!
No, still need my G.E.D.
Humbled, I left joyous.

The video of war vets
returning home to surprise
daughters, sons, and wives
their tears and joy
overwhelmed me.

The snake the cats brought in,
the decorated canvas bag
from an otherwise preoccupied niece,
the undeserved generosity of friends,
the drunk transformed in recovery.

Enough crisis and pain abound
to create a billion cynics.
But I choose to be amazed
still wondering
if God can be surprised.

Author's Note: Whether or not my and the waitress' interpretation match conventional interpretation of the sonnet, the convergence of Willie, a Denney's waitress, the musings of a philosopher on CD, and me this morning was a special moment that inspired me. Sound wonderings and great images/ideas. If He chose to be surprise, I'd guess so...but more regularly, He certainly surprises me and there is no surprise more magical than the surprise of being loved. I think it must be God's finger on man's/woman's shoulder. Excellent write. Thanks.

For me one need not go too far back in the history of English to not quiet understand the meaning. But then the most newly created words and phrases by the younger set do the same thing to me. Good write Glenn.

...with free will being tantamount, still i bet He chuckles at man and his use of rationalizations of said free will...ponderable. making this a healthy write...He doesn't wonder about you m'friend, He knows how many hairs used to be on your pate.

But I love the idea, that we might inspire something, anything, in God...even if it's just surprise.

Can God be surprised? I think it is not presumptuous of me to say He can. I think we as created beings surprise Him at every turn, such as the creation of this poem which I can say without a doubt, I was surprised by in more than a pleasant way the moment I committed more than my eyes to it.

ah, the vagaries of Texas weather. I feel this on every level; from the common, to the profound, and everything in between. And i bet we have given Him more surprises than would ever be admitted.
