Wedding Cake by Deborah S Regana reception, waiting on a silver platter
for groom and bride
my sugar and butter filled heart
can barely calm its pulse
I am cake, to be served
and smashed into the groom's face
by a somewhat playful wife
and my leftover top layer
packed into some kind of freezer
in layers of tupperware
my pale-pink outside shows Swiss-dots
while moist cake-ness lies inside.
to exist for one day
and be remembered for a lifetime,
what a lucky confection I am. 07/01/2010 Posted on 07/01/2010 Copyright © 2025 Deborah S Regan

| Posted by Therese Elaine on 07/01/10 at 09:12 PM A very important part of what is supposed to be a memorable occasion...and you know, this reminds me of a conversation I had with three other women, who had all been divorced, and one of them asked the other two what they remembered most about their wedding days and they all agreed, "Well, the cake was amazing!!" |

| Posted by Glenn Currier on 07/01/10 at 10:56 PM What a clever poem! How many of them I have seen - almost always things to admire and gah gah over. But never have I thought of how it must be from the cake's point of view. You make me think of even more possibilities - being the receptacle of that first joint cut the newly joined couple - that cut symbolic of oh so many more they will make together and to each other. Fascinating. Thanks. |

| Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 11/16/12 at 02:49 PM That first stanza brings this cake to life in all its grand intentions. "to exist for one day
and be remembered for a lifetime," This is so true. My friends and I all revere those in our groups who make the wedding cakes for the next lucky bride and groom. Congrats on POTD! |
