hyacinth

by Morgan D Hafele

it's a story worthy of one as beautiful as you.
the jealousy of the gods
all their love and rage
apollo shining as bright as ever
and zephyr surfing through the clouds
through their tug of war
over you
blood was spilled
and your world was lost

i cannot say if it was love
or selfishness
or if you are blessed or cursed

but now
now you have only grown in beauty
over the ages

woodstock hycinth

you help us taste heaven
one day perhaps you will taste it too

Author's Note: inspired by the little piece in ms. Carissa Dewey's introduction by Edna St. Vincent Millay. i didn't know what a hyacinth was until today. (maybe i should be embarrassed? =p)

found the image here: http://hankinslawrenceimages.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/woodstock_hyacinth.jpg

i hope the person who took it doesn't mind me borrowing it.

I couldn't have identified a hyacinth either - beautiful flower, beautiful poem - googled hyacinth and learned the mythological background. If I had taken that photograph, I would be quite pleased to have it associated with your poem.

...morgan, like you 'do it proud' as Loretta Lynn would say. serendipity in clicking-on your pome...i'll never look at a hyacinth the same. like linda says your beautiful words and the line-breaks are totally KICKING! you can be proud of this one. as you should be many of yours...i'm just sayin'

Ah Morgan, this is a lovely piece -suited to Victorian chapbooks of young-love poetry, art-gallery contemplation on sleepy Sunday afternoons and the arboretums of olde.

So out of character for you. Love it though. Funny... The flower I'm stalling on drawing for my current series is a hyacinth. (You'd know that if you were facebook... Just sayin'.) Lovely, aren't they? ^_~

It's nice to see this softer side to you. I think you did an amazing job with the imagery in this piece and the photo, well that's just icing on this cake you've baked for us. Good job, Moe.

A quaint positive message here. I especially like the reference to Heaven in the closure. That photo almost looks like a painting at first glance.

Heaven on earth in my own garden - I will think of this poem each spring. Lovely.

Love it. I learned a new flower today. What a beautiful, epic introduction for such a complex flower. I'm learning so much about landscaping this year. My two latest plant learnings are Zinnias and Gardenias!

This poem is the best I've read in ages. One hyacinth will scent your entire garden. My POTD pick for todsy.
