Open Water

by George Hoerner

the ocean water pushes

toward the shore with its

head on top of the waves

like any young man in heat

trying to mate with land’s soul

clawing and gurgling up the beach

slipping its tongue into every

nook and cranny to taste

each and every grain of sand

until it is exhausted and slowly

flows back into the ocean

hoping to be reinvigorated

sufficiently to make another run

to score with the bare beach

but like a woman refusing to

make love in front of a crowd

she rejects the water and says

“come and see me when the storm

roars at night the beach is deserted

bring your fury when the moon is dark

reach past my dunes and feel my bones

kiss my wet sighs until i lie

open to your every touch"

it seems the beach has a greater sense of intimacy than the ocean could ever hope to achieve =)

Wow. Now this is one more sensual (sandsual?) poem! Breaks my heart that it's unlikely my children, possibly even my grandchildren will never again get to experience our state's beaches like I was privileged to.

...sensual, yes. and on continent after continent tis a daily occurrence, the ocean needs a cigarette. nahahaha, good write. i like the narrative, the breadth. comprehensive. touches all.

I enjoyed this conversation very much.

This is slinky, saturated and it clings to the mind like sweat-soaked limbs and seaweed caresses...and the metaphor -oh the metaphor contained within -simply...dare I say it...oceanic...

Awhhhhhh...this is so good! And as a person who just 30 minutes ago returned from staring for hours at the surf....I'm an expert. Really enjoyed this.

Nice to see I'm not the only one with ocean on his mind. I really like the extended complex metaphor at work here George. Congrats on hitting #1!

I love the way you make the waves and the beach lovers! Sensually written with vivid imagery. The banter between the two is fantastic.
