Watching

by George Hoerner

many, many years ago
i would not look
at the dark night sky

for fear the dark
would swallow me
i would never see
the light of day

i carried this fear
in my heart for
far to long

till someone came
and introduced me
to my friends

now i walk the night
knowing Orion stands
sword at hand

watching over me
though cautiousness
still rides my shoulder

keeping Venus in sight
and still looking
forward to daylight

A very honest write. We all have fears. You expressed your feelings so well. Excellent write- from start to finish- thank you.

was it not Franklin D. who said we've nothing to fear but fear itself, and yet as much as we try to quell the fear by whatever devices available to us, still fear is something that must run its course, like everything else, even this gem of a poem.

I can remember when younger standing out under the stars feeling like I could be sucked up into the vastness of it at any moment. It commands awe and goes way past my mortal understanding, for sure. One can see how humans needed to name parts of it to form some kind of relationship/kinship. Orion is one of my favorites.
