capricorn solstice by Brian Roberts
Last May beneath a cluttered night sky
You served me candles in lieu of cake-
Stiff Stalks of light wore last harvest
like tears, melting moments I had no right
To see, nor now lament;
Oak trees, having sloughed their rust, now
harbor death with outstretched hands
A plate of zinnias, arthritic with chill,
once pried from fecund earth, now
Rest upon the silver slate.
